Secret Affiliate Weapon - 6 Essential Strategies For Affiliate Programs

There are some basic strategies that marketers must take into account when they decide to get start driving traffic to their affiliate product. There are a number of ways you can do so, but today we will discuss the top 7. Each of these strategies can get traffic to your product quickly.
1. Pay Per Click
Getting traffic to your product can be done very easily with PPC. The most popular of these systems is the Google AdWords, followed by Yahoo Search Marketing, and then MSN AdCenter. There are more that you can take advantage of as well, but these are the 2 largest. If you are new to PPC you have to be careful. PPC can be costly if you don't know what you're doing, mistakes add up quickly so read some guides before you get started.
Before starting with the larger services, you might want to test yourself with a smaller service or two. A few that come to mind are Miva, Kanoodle, and 7search. All of these offer good traffic, and allow you to get used to test water before you jump in head first. They are not as expensive, so you can learn a lot without risking a lot of money like you will on the others.
2. Article Marketing
This is one of the best areas for gathering free traffic to your site. You write articles that inform the audience you want to reach about a given topic. You want to provide information to the readers, not a sales pitch. Evaluate this article as an example. I am providing useful information to anyone that reads it, without trying to promote something and make a sale. The only place I make any attempt to sell is the link in my resources box, and that is not selling but rather letting the reader know where they can get more information like this.
The benefits of article marketing are huge. First, it's FREE! It only costs you the time it takes to write the article. Now you can get other people to write the articles for you, but it's expensive. If you want to make it in affiliate marketing you need to learn to do this. Second, anyone who reads the article you already know is the type of person you are targeting. This means that if they visit your product, they are already thinking about purchasing. They might not know they are thinking about it, but just the act of wanting to get more information proves it.
3. Use your own list
There is a saying in marketing circles that you might have already heard, "The money is in the list." Once you have developed your own list of subscribers you want to build a relationship based on trust. Before someone feels like they can buy from you, they first need to like you, before they like you they need to learn to trust you.
So building a list is about building relationships. Give your list useful information on a regular basis and you will build that relationship. Don't just contact your list when you want to make an offer to them. Give them information and they will look forward to your emails. Then at the end of your useful information you can recommend a product or service.
4. Use someone else's list
It takes time to build your own list, but the rewards are well worth it. Another option is to use someone else's list. They already have their relationships built. You can pay to promote your product to just about any list. One easy way to do this is to do a search for ezines related to the topic you are promoting. For example, if you are promoting an ebook for dog training, search for dog training ezines. Contact the ezine owner and ask to advertise in the ezine.
Some ezines offer several ads in the ezine. These will be less responsive because they come across more as classified ads. A single ad in an ezine comes across as a recommendation from the list owner. If the owner seems to recommend something, there will be more interest in it because of that whole relationship built on trust thing I talked about in section 3.
There is one thing you need to be aware of. The more responsive a list is, the more difficult it might be to get your product on the list. This is because the owner wants to protect that list, she they will be more restrictive as to what and who is allowed to promote on it. This is a good thing and well worth getting turned down several times before you get on a good list.
5. Your own website
While you do not need a website to promote affiliate products, it makes it easier. One reason is the whole trust thing again. (Are you seeing a pattern here with the trust issue?) People expect companies to have websites now, and if they don't there is automatically less trust. Another reason is it gives you a place to advertise your products. You can create a website that provides useful information along with recommendations to the products you want to promote. Then when people get your free information (which builds trust) they will click your affiliate link to get more information about the items you recommend.
6. Thank You Emails
This is something that many people overlook. I don't understand why either. This is a powerful place to make offers. The visitor has already given you a vote of confidence and has shown they trust you. So when they make a purchase you have already overcome the trust barrier. When you send them a thank you email for their purchase, send them a recommendation on a closely related product to the one they just purchased. You then make backend sales, and it's automatic with no effort on your part.
